In general, as a software, Yelp has a lot of room for improvement. It needs to be changed urgently both in terms of function and mode of operation. As a company, it lacks the most basic attention to sustainability and the information is not transparent. These are not the performance that a qualified software will have.

What it's made of:

Yelp ranks fourth in the Food & Drink category of the Apple Store, with an overall score of 4.1. According to customer feedback, it is not very good software. First of all, many customers reported that they were forced to download the software because if one didn't do that, one couldn't browse the entire content. Secondly, a lot of information about the restaurant is wrong, such as opening times, events, menus, etc. Most of the above content is outdated, and even many users say that Yelp has been abandoned by the times, even though it was once one of the hottest software in the industry. And, despite the delivery-related functions, the experience is extremely bad. There are few restaurants in the software that provide takeaway, and the service is also very poor. More importantly, its core is to allow users who have consumed to listen to and provide comments, so that other users can make reasonable judgments based on these. In the case of losing many users, this aspect of the function has also become unreliable, causing more loss of users, thus forming a vicious circle. In summary, after reading the evaluation of Yelp today, it is hard not to doubt that this software is going downhill.
In terms of the composition of the software, I did not find any data related to sustainability. Yelp’s first founders were two PayPal employees, so maybe the initial software composition is similar to the previous PayPal. But I don't know Yelp's main programming language, server location, or any related information. Therefore, I have no way of judging what Yelp is like in this regard.

How it's made:

Yelp’s most notorious thing is the means it uses to maintain software. If a business fails to submit additional advertising costs, Yelp will give it a malicious negative review. Not only that, but many reviews are false. But Yelp did not manage those effectively. This will not only mislead the masses but also lead to unfair commercial competition and drag down the market. Yelp's performance has been unsatisfactory, and there has been no obvious change and progress in recent years. I don't think this behavior is worthy of praise, so the score is not high.

Who makes it:

After investigation, I feel that Yelp is relatively indifferent in terms of sustainability. Yelp almost never has any related reports, only a few blogs published a few years ago. The relevant data for the last one or two years is completely missing. Since 2019, I can't find the relevant statement on Yelp's official website.

  1. As a large company, Yelp lacks short-term and long-term goals in this regard. I personally think that they are not paying enough attention to related topics. There is no separate webpage on Yelp's website to tell about this aspect of news, such as carbon emissions, employee status, etc.
  2. In response to the epidemic, Yelp only made a very brief statement. It said it would help hotels and groups that may be affected, but it lacks policies that can be implemented. The statement did not specify who will be helped, the specific method of assistance, the amount of investment, and many other details. In the same way, Yelp mentioned the employees who will help it. There are many channels to help employees, such as helping them vaccinate, providing them with intact equipment to reduce the infection rate, etc., but Yelp did not mention any details. This makes people wonder whether they really implemented these statements.
  3. Yelp has issued intermittent statements about reducing the use of disposable plastic tableware. It mentioned such words as they would supervise restaurants and work hard to reduce plastic pollution. But I did not find evidence to prove that they did have relevant actions and policies. And there is no data to show that their actions have contributed to the environment.
