Teddie Peanut Butter is a fourth-generation family-owned business located in Everett, Massachusetts. Teddie skips the added sweeteners and vegetable oils, and opts for simple dry roasted peanuts. However, the company advertises their products as All-Natural, which does not have a regulated definition. This is misleading for consumers and requires more transparency on how the peanuts they use are grown and harvested. Furthermore, Teddie is dedicated to supporting causes such as the Greater Boston Food Bank and Best Buddies International to create a more inclusive community.

What it's made of:


The only ingredient in Teddie All-Natural Peanut Butter is dry roasted peanuts. Peanuts are a great source of protein for a plant-based diet and a single serving can provide you with more than 10% of your daily recommended protein value. In addition, peanut butter is a great source of vitamins B3 and E, magnesium, and fiber. Oleic acid is one of the main fats in peanut butter, which helps maintain a healthy cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure. Teddie is a great alternative to other peanut butters that contain additives and sweeteners such as sugar, vegetable oils, and trans fat.

In addition, Teddie comes in a 16oz glass jar that can either be recycled or repurposed. However, it is difficult to determine if this packaging is more sustainable compared to plastic containers. Glass production requires removing sand from seabeds and disrupting the surrounding ecosystems. In addition, glass is heavier than plastic, which means it may produce more emissions during transit. Teddie needs to provide more information on their packaging, such as if they are using recycled glass or new materials that take up more energy and resources. 

How it's made:


Teddie claims to use 100% USA grown and harvested dry roasted peanuts. However, their website’s fine print states, “Due to limited supply of USA organic peanuts, we occasionally source USDA approved organic peanuts from South America.” Teddie must increase its transparency around how much of their sourcing comes from the United States compared to South America. In addition, Teddie sells an Organic All-Natural Peanut Butter along with a variety of All-Natural Peanut Butters. The issue with “Natural” label claiming is that there is no regulatory definition of “Natural.” However, products labeled as “Organic” must contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients. Since Teddie’s products only contain dry roasted peanuts, the only difference in Teddie’s ingredient lists is organic versus non-organic peanuts. Why can’t Teddie use all organic peanuts for their peanut butters?

Another important consideration for a sustainable consumer is a product's water footprint, or the total volume of water used to produce a good. The high water consumption of almonds and cashews have been recently brought to light. However, peanuts have one of the lowest water footprints of nuts. Peanuts use 1513 liters per pound, while almonds use 7302 liters per pound and cashews use 6450 liters per pound. This is largely due to peanuts' ability to adjust their growing cycle based on water availability. In addition, peanuts are nitrogen fixing, which means that they have the ability to take nitrogen from the air and produce their own. This benefits surrounding soil and crops through not depleting the available nitrogen.

Who makes it:


Teddie was founded in 1925 by Michael Hintlian and his family who had just emigrated from Armenia and settled in Boston. The Hintlian’s formed The Leavitt Corporation, which began producing Teddie All-Natural Peanut Butter. After World War II, James Hintlian partnered with Michael. Teddie soon became the number one all-natural peanut butter in the Northeast and is now a fourth-generation family-run business. Teddie All-Natural Peanut Butter is also a dedicated supporter of organizations such as Buddies International and the Greater Boston Food Bank. Teddie has been partners with Best Buddies and supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for many years. Each year they raise money for the Hintlian’s nephew James, who was born with Down syndrome, and his cycling team. Teddie also partners with the Greater Boston Food Bank, which is a hunger relief organization in New England that distributes healthy and nutritious food to people in Eastern Massachusetts. Teddie contributes through peanut butter and monetary donations. It is clear that Teddie All-Natural Peanut Butter has a strong desire to help social injustices and make a positive impact on the lives of people in the Boston area.
