Do you want to feed your pets food that’s good for them and the planet? Look no further! Stella & Chewy might be the food for you. Stella & Chewy’s is a woman owned business that was founded on the basis of creating natural, species appropriate food for our beloved pets. A lot of mainstream pet food is full of fillers and preservatives that are extremely bad for our pets' health. Stella & Chewy’s is free of all those harmful chemicals and fillers, such as carrageenan, which is a common component of wet pet food that is a known carcinogen for cats and dogs. Overall, Stella & Chewy’s is a great example of a sustainable option for pets and pet owners, yet an area for improvement ( that they are currently working on) is diverting away from plastic packaging; this is why I awarded this product an overall rating of 2.25 planets!

What it's made of:

Stella & Chewy’s Freeze Dried Raw Chicken Dinner Morsels are made of: chicken (ground with bone), chicken liver, chicken gizzard, pumpkin seed, potassium chloride, sodium phosphate, choline chloride, fenugreek seed, as well as the necessary vitamins and minerals our cats need. It is made of 98% meat, organs, and bone from responsibly sourced proteins, fortified with added vitamins and minerals, and enhanced with probiotics and antioxidants free of hormones, antibiotics, artificial flavors, preservatives, or colors.

Stella & Chewy’s is committed to transparency, which includes their sourcing information. Their ingredients come from trusted partners and suppliers who raise their animals in cage-free environmentals, grow their produce organically, and only use wild caught fish. While the pet food is made in the United States, the ingredients used to make it are sourced from all over the world with the elk, beef, lamb and venison from Australia and New Zealand, while this ensures great quality, the transportation emits a greater amount of CO2 compared to using local or domestically raised animals. Currently, Stella & Chewy’s is slowly transitioning to having recyclable packaging by providing two options for consumers: curbside drop off where consumers can check with their municipality to determine which recycling numbers are accepted with curbside pickup. Their new packaging is plastic made of recyclable #4 (LDPE) or recyclable #2 (HDPE) that can be dropped off at stores where packaging with the ‘How2Recycle’ label can be dropped off in select stores to be recycled (the participating store locations available on their website). Stella & Chewy’s are currently partnered with How2Recycle and the Pet Sustainability Coalition in order to further their mission of sustainability.

How it's made:

Stella & Chewy’s Freeze Dried Raw Dinner Morsels are made by a process called high pressure processing, utilizing state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and processes to assure high quality and nutritious foods for our pet. The frozen and freeze-dried raw products go through high pressure processing to naturally destroy harmful bacteria while assuring the food’s nutritional value is not affected by using time and pressure to reduce and deactivate the pathogens in foods. No heat is applied so high pressure processing offers a sustainable solution in terms of cutting waste, lowering emissions and energy use, and improving shelf-life capabilities. The growth of high pressure processing has been driven by consumers' demand for fresh taste without the use of chemicals or preservatives, the only drawback to note is that high pressure processing does require a considerable amount of water.

Stella & Chewy’s was awarded the title of one of the ‘Top Workplaces of 2020’ by journal sentinel.
