All in all, I think Neutrogena is a great product and alternative to sunscreens that include harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate. The ingredients are broad spectrum based which benefits the consumer in terms health, skin care and aging. J&J is a huge cooperation that seems to be doing their part in following the UN’s SDGs and shows progress of their own in various fields.

What it's made of:

This product by Neutrogena is a 100% mineral active based sunscreen that has a broad spectrum, which protects from UVA rays along with UVB rays. The benefits of broad spectrum sunscreens are protection from UVB and UVA rays simultaneously which protects skin from premature aging, wrinkles and dark spots. Neutrogena posted the following ingredients on their website: *Active ingredients*: Zinc Oxide 21.6% (sunscreen) *Inactive ingredients:* Water, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Styrene/acrylates Copolymer, Octyldodecyl Citrate Crosspolymer, Phenyl Trimethicone, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Glycerin, Ethyl Methicone, Cetyl Dimethicone, Silica, Chrysanthemum Parthenium (Feverfew) Flower/leaf/stem Juice, Glyceryl Behenate, Phenethyl Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetyl Dimethicone/bis-vinyldimethicone Crosspolymer, Acrylates/dimethicone Copolymer, Sodium Chloride, _Phenoxyethanol_, Chlorphenesin. The product does not include oxybenzone or octinoxate which are chemicals banned in the state of Hawaii as a result of coral bleaching. Yet, it is important to keep in mind that sunscreen research is still advancing and more facts are becoming known for the effects of various chemicals in sunscreen products. On the other hand, according to EWG ( a beauty database that assesses chemicals in beauty products. EWG did a review on this sunscreen and marked many of the inactive ingredients like “_Phenoxyethanol_” as “cancer risk” ingredients. Along with this, on the face of the Neutrogena sunscreen bottle it is quoted that the product is “hypoallergenic” which means that it is relatively unlikely to cause a allergic reaction. However, many product reviews on Neutrogena’s website on this particular sunscreen include complaints of itching after use and other various allergic reactions. Along with this EWG, cites that many of the inactive ingredients can have moderate allergic reactions. Overall, the ingredients in the product follow environmental sustainable standards and use minimal (known) coral bleaching chemicals. Yet, since the product description does claim to be a 100% active mineral hypoallergenic, but still has allergic issues for many consumer, this section will receive 2/3 planets.

How it's made:

Neutrogena has no data or sources explaining how their sunscreen is made. However, according to Silverson ( a manufacture of product chemical mixing writes the following: Generally sunscreen products have an oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsion, according to . These consist of emollients and lubricants, emulsifying and thickening agents, perfume, color, preservatives and UV filter and absorbers such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Effective UV protection is dependant on completeness of dispersion and on particle size of the UV filters and absorbers. Despite this, the environmental effects of how suncreen is made remains unclear, but there are obvious carbon footprints that likely follow the production of sunscreen. But for this reason, I will leave a non-applicable rating since it remains unknown for this particular sunscreen. However, that does question the transparency from Neutrogena’s side in terms of what they are releasing and keeping Clear to the consumer.

Who makes it:

The data recognizes that J&J is on track to fulfill and have exceeded these goals. Only section that is off-track is in the women and children’s health sector where they aspired to reach 60 million women and children will have full health support resources by 2020. Thus far, they have only achieved 40 million.
