Hippeas are a yummy vegan alternative to the infamous cheese puff, and I personally think they taste even better than the “real” thing. The company works to create natural, tasty snacks and positive social change. It’s hard to not like Hippeas, especially when the packaging is literally smiling back at you! :) Ingredients: Chickpea Flour, Rice Flour, Sunflower Oil, Tapioca Starch, Pea Hull Fiber, Brown Rice Flour, Salt, Cane Sugar, Onion Powder, Citric Acid, Garlic Powder, Rice Concentrate, Lactic Acid, Canola Oil, Natural Flavor, Rosemary Extract, Organic Ingredients Certifications: Certified Gluten Free, Kosher, Vegan, USDA Organic, Non GMO, No Nuts, No Soy

What it's made of:

Chickpeas! Hippeas are a great source of fiber and protein (3g fiber and 4g protein per 1 oz serving.) The ingredients are mostly straightforward and sound pretty familiar to me. The vague use of the “natural flavor” is kind of suspicious, although because Hippeas are USDA Organic certified, synthetic ingredients can not be used, which is a little reassuring.

How it's made:

As chickpea plants grow, they release nitrogen back into the soil, maintaining its nutrients. Because these peas are grown organically, their carbon footprint is relatively low. Hippeas are baked, making them a healthier alternative to oily chips.

Who makes it:

Livio Bisterzo is the creator of Hippeas through his company Green Park Brands. His mission is to create natural healthy foods while also creating a positive social impact. Hippeas works with local charities such as Feeding America and are working with Farm Africa on a 5-year plan to invest in and develop a sustainable chickpea supply-chain streamlined from Ethiopia. This is great news for farmers in Ethiopia, but I wonder about the carbon footprint of exporting these products from Ethiopia to the U.S. and Ireland, where they are manufactured.
