The Watermelon Pink Juice Moisturizer is generally well-made in terms of sustainability standards.  The main sustainability issues comes from potential produce waste based on production processes and product demand, the lack of clear production transparency, and post-consumer waste.  Glow Recipe has a partnership with TerraCycle to create easier recyclability for its products, but requires providing consumer education in order to encourage recyclable behavior and upcycling processes.

  • The moisturizer uses natural ingredients in its formulation which makes it a cleaner, oil-free moisturizer option as well as the ease in how they inform their consumers about how to recycle every part of their product.

  • It is a set at a high price since it uses natural ingredients and recyclable materials, but it would also be nice to see more transparency in the production process of their products like how they made a short video about their watermelon sleeping mask

What it's made of:

The key ingredients for Glow Recipe’s watermelon moisturizer comes from using watermelon, hyaluronic acid, jasmine and peony extracts.  Other ingredients used for the product are listed below the key ingredient description on their website.  These ingredients include various wheat proteins, fruit extracts, and natural ingredients.

Their ingredients are Leaping Bunny approved, which is a cruelty-free certification from the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC).  The group is composed of eight national animal protection groups that work with companies to help them make cruelty-free product shopping easier and trustworthy.

The main tradeoff from using mostly natural ingredients is the new demand for them.  The high demand for organic, high-quality ingredients would increase production which may create excess waste if all of the product is not incorporated.

How it's made:

The formulation and manufacturing process is not entirely clear on Glow Recipe’s site other than their primary selection of natural ingredients.  Glow Recipe’s site does provides the entire listing of the products ingredients as well as an information blurb on its choice for including its minimal amount of fragrance.  They also mention which ingredients that their products are free of in their “About” tab and within the product’s ingredient listing.  However, there is no mention of where the product itself is made or the types of processes used for the moisturizer.

Glow Recipe does have a production video that highlights the production process of their best-seller, the Watermelon Sleeping Mask which is similar to the Watermelon Juice Moisturizer minus certain ingredients.  Almost all of the watermelon is used in the process, from the seeds down to the watermelon’s rind.

The packaging of the moisturizer is designed to be either repurposed for other uses or can be recycled through their partnership with TerraCycle.  Their moisturizer’s bottle is made 20% glass and on the company’s website, there is an in-depth guide on how to recycle each part of the product.  The carton boxes, included tissue paper, air bubbles, and leaflets are recyclable and use recycled materials from post-consumer waste.

Who makes it:

Glow Recipe is a skincare company that was founded by two former L’Oréal executives, Sarah Lee and Christine Chang, who were inspired by the emergence of K-beauty trends and found the opportunity to leverage their bicultural and bilingual backgrounds into skincare products.  Inspired by the opportunity to educate consumers on emerging K-beauty trends, they wanted to make K-beauty skincare innovation accessible to consumers through their products.

Their company headquarters are located in New York and their main production takes place in both the United States and in South Korea.  Other than their main production facilities general locations and the NYC company headquarters, it is unclear where each product is made.  Their original Watermelon Sleeping Mask is manufactured in the outskirts of Seoul, South Korea, but there is no additional information about which factory produces them.
