Cedar’s is committed to maintaining their authentic Mediterranean roots through using simple, fresh ingredients. They stay true to their original recipe that doesn’t use additives or synthetic preservatives. This makes for a nutritious snack that is planet-based and delicious. Although Cedar’s motto is “Know what you’re eating. Know Better Hommus” they provide no information on the sourcing of their ingredients or how their products are made. They continuously use words such as honest and transparent, but have a lack of information on their sustainability efforts. Although I do not believe this company is greenwashed, they must provide consumers more information on their products and be held accountable.

What it's made of:

Cedar’s original hommus is made out of steamed chickpeas (chickpeas, water), sesame tahini (ground sesame), sunflower oil, olive oil, sea salt, garlic, citric acid, cumin, and guar gum. Cedar’s also offers a fully organic original hommus that is certified USDA organic. Their products are non-GMO, gluten free, vegan, and have no added sugar. Cedar’s cares about the purity of their ingredients and that’s why they skip any additives and synthetic preservatives, such as potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate. Instead, they use citric acid, which is an organic preserving agent that naturally occurs in many citrus fruits.

Chickpeas are a great source of plant-based protein and are packed with antioxidants. However, it’s important to watch out for high amounts of fat and sodium in hommus. Specifically, just two tablespoons of Cedar’s Organic Original Hommus contains 6 grams of fat (8% DV) and 110 milligrams of sodium (5% DV). Overall, Cedar’s Hommus pairs well with veggies for a great snack and provides some plant-based protein.

How it's made:

There is minimal information on the process of Cedar’s production and where they source their ingredients from. However, their website breaks down the general process, which includes picking vine-dried garbanzo beans, soaking the garbanzo beans in water, steaming them, chopping them to create a smooth hommus, adding tahini and other spices, and finally stirring it all together. They use authentic recipes and a simple process to create a fresh and delicious product from the Mediterranean coast. Although the business started as a small operation, they now use high-tech and a system of pipes and massive tanks to mix the ingredients then send them to a packaging room. There is no information on if Cedar’s uses any form of renewable energy to power their factories.

The main ingredient in hommus is chickpeas. Although Cedar’s provides no information on where they source their chickpeas from, traditionally chickpeas are a sustainable crop. Chickpeas have a moderate water footprint, a low carbon footprint, and create no known damage to the natural environment or animals. However, Cedar’s does not state where they source their chickpeas from, which could drastically increase their hommus’ overall carbon footprint. Chickpeas are mostly produced in India, Turkey, and Russia. In the United States, they are primarily produced in Montana, Washington, Idaho, and North Dakota. Since Cedar’s factory is located in Massachusetts, the transportation of their chickpeas could cause additional carbon emissions.

Who makes it:

Cedar’s was founded by Abe Hanna who started selling his recipe locally during the 1980s in Lebanon. Abe used pure ingredients and traditional spices to perfect his delicious recipe. Eventually, his wife and he moved to New England to share their recipe with the rest of the world. Now the company is still family-owned and dedicated to providing its customers with the same simple, delicious hommus Abe created.

Cedar’s with Heart includes its employees, community, and consumers that encompasses their “mission to know better, do better and make a difference.” To connect their customers to their employees, each month Cedar’s introduces you to a member of their team on their website. Cedar’s is also committed to helping local communities. They have partnered with the Whole Planet Foundation, which provides microcredit loans to entrepreneurs and families that want to expand their business, but don’t have the financial means. This is very important to Cedar’s since they are a family-owned company that was once fighting for the opportunity to create the business they are today.

It is clear that Cedar’s deeply cares about the well-being of its employees, community, and customers. However, it is vital that they provide additional information on where they source their ingredients from and the working conditions that the laborers are exposed to. This is especially important because agriculture is a dangerous industry that often exposes laborers to harmful chemicals and provides little pay.
