One of the first things you hear about when you head off to college is how expensive textbooks are. A new textbook can cost well into the 300-500 USD range. With five classes each semester, suddenly, you’ve spent over 1000 USD textbooks ALONE. Never mind the tens of thousands of dollars you’re already paying to go to college in the first place.

A little tip to college students from a recent college grad: you DO NOT need to buy all the textbooks recommended for a class. Of all the books I’ve bought during my college career, I probably only used half of them.

With that being said, there are times when you do have to buy the textbook, and that’s where ThriftBooks comes in!

The cost of textbooks can be a massive hurdle for college students to overcome, as the choice suddenly comes between buying books needed for classes and paying your rent. ThriftBooks recognizes that knowledge should not be exclusive to those with a lot of money but should instead be widely accessible and affordable for EVERYONE.

All a used bookstore really has to do to be considered “sustainable” is... sell used books. Obviously, if you’re gonna buy a book, a used one is better for the environment (and your wallet) than a brand new one. Most people would consider that to be enough to help the environment, but ThriftBooks goes above and beyond!

Along with sourcing their books from community-based organizations, they also employ artificial intelligence (AI) to help them sort, transport and evaluate each book. This allows workers to avoid displacement and work on the more intellectuals aspects of the job. The AI also helps the company reduce waste and improve access to quality books. Isn’t technology just incredible, and we love to see a business that actually cares about its workers!

The next time you’re looking for a cheaper and more environmentally friendly way to buy books, ThriftBooks is definitely the way to go!
