Outerknown is a brand established by Kelly Slater, an accomplished 11 time world champion for surfing. Her company strongly emphasizes sustainability, focusing on fair labor practices, sustainable fabrics, and lots of other initiatives.

This clothing company is Fair Trade certified and provides a very detailed list of suppliers (unfortunately, this is a rare practice). This kind of transparency is something that should become the new norm and I am glad to see Outerknown setting a good example.

Slater’s brand is also accredited by the Fair Labor Association, which advocates for adherence to international labor laws and fair practices. It is obvious that this company puts serious thought into where its products come from and who makes them, which is a refreshing contrast to the fast fashion industry.

Focusing on one specific product, Outerknown’s S.E.A. suit is a jumpsuit made from a mix of organic cotton and linen. Organic cotton uses 71 percent less water to produce than conventional cotton and is free of chemicals from pesticides that are harmful to both human and environmental health. From a sustainability perspective, organic is really the only acceptable choice when using cotton. Linen is made from flax fibers and also uses significantly less water than conventional cotton.

The buttons on this jumpsuit are not your average plastic, environmentally harmful buttons. They are composed of a material called corozo which is derived from tagua palm nuts harvested once they have already fallen from their trees. These type of buttons are a better option than plastic since they are not derived from fossil fuels and are fully biodegradable.

The materials used in this jumpsuit are exceptional in the fashion world since they do not rely on synthetic materials or pesticides. I love to see this.

In addition to its use of sustainable materials, Outerknown also has the goal of making all of their products circular by 2030. Their plan to achieve this as well as other initiatives is outlined in a PDF on their website’s sustainability tab.

Outerknown stands out because of its strong devotion to sustainability and level of transparency that even other “sustainable” companies do not match. Let’s show them some love!
